It’s been a couple of weeks since we’ve gone into self isolation and told to work from home. It’s a huge shift for so many from working in an office to working in their personal space. There is a lot of adjusting to do.
When I started working from home for the first time, it was a weird shift, however, I’ve found my groove with it. So, that being said, I thought I would give a couple pointers on how to find your space for your time working from home.
Working from home tips from an at home worker:
Keep a routine
When you’re working from home, it’s really easy to ease into the day and, suddenly, it’s already noon. While there is nothing wrong with working later in the day, finding a chunk of time in your day that works best for you is key. It could be 9 to 5 or, maybe, it’s noon to 8. Whatever works best for you and what you’re doing, keep a routine and make that your time to work and be productive.
Get yourself in a groove
Some days it’s hard to get yourself motivated. On those days, I start with sending emails and getting myself organized so what I’m looking to get done for the day doesn’t look so daunting. Also, it gives me a clear indication that I have these things to get done and these things only so I can stay focused.
Get a good playlist & some headphones - you’re going to need it
Whatever your situation, being home is super distracting. Depending on who you live with, there will be variations of distracting activity. My best combatant against distractions is a good pair of headphones and a motivating playlist. That way, I can focus, solely, on what I’m doing.
Find the best space
This could be a makeshift desk in the corner of your bedroom, your kitchen table, or your home office, if you have one. Find a space that will keep you organized an motivated. When you’re looking to get a lot accomplished in one work session, this is a necessity. Being too comfortable on the couch or in your bed can be a slippery slope into a mid afternoon nap or a distracting Netflix binge. Trust me - been there, definitely napped.
Get yourself accountability partners
I have SEVERAL. At home working warriors are all over the place so if you have a friend who is used to working from home, ask them to be your accountability partner. This will help you both get what you want accomplished.
